Projects
Below is a selection of projects I have worked on recently. If you are interested in additional project descriptions, please contact me.
Outward Bound
I am proud to support grant writing for Outward Bound, a client since summer of 2006. Outward Bound has challenged over one million students with outdoor leadership programs since its U.S. founding in 1962. From local schools and parks to wilderness areas, Outward Bound helps young people gain valuable knowledge about the environment and themselves.
Outward Bound is expanding its reach in underserved urban communities, where youth have fewer opportunities to experience physical and mental outdoor challenges that lead to positive personal growth. As part of a growing national network, the new Outward Bound Bay Area Center, based in San Francisco, launched local programing in 2008. With a growing base of supporters, in its second full year of programming, the Bay Area Center served over 800 students through deep partnerships with local schools and youth serving organizations.
Afghan Coalition
I serve as an advisor to the Afghan Coalition in Southern Alameda County, a community building agency leading efforts to bring health and social service access to underserved immigrants and refugees and promote economic self-sufficiency for very low income Afghan women. Through a process of project management and training, I have helped the agency develop critical infrastructure, including the organization of a strategic planning process, implementation of a donor database and the design and build of a custom case management system. I have also led efforts to secure grant funding with state and local foundations and government agencies including The California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation, The San Francisco Foundation and Alameda County.
The Bay Citizen
First known as the Bay Area News Project, The Bay Citizen was launched early in spring 2010 in partnership with the UC Berkeley School of Journalism to enhance civic and community news coverage in the Bay Area, stimulate innovation in journalism and foster civic engagement. I worked in collaboration with project partners in the organization's start-up phase to investigate, research and assist in the implementation of the new nonprofit. My work included researching the development of a nonprofit business model, planning infrastructure, writing grant proposals and developing communications for the purposes of building visibility, educating the public and engaging philanthropic support.
