Publications Philanthropy News Digest: For this publication of The Foundation Center, wrote an article titled The ABCs of Podcasting for The Sustainable Nonprofit column. The article features nonprofits using and experimenting with new web-based technologies, primarily podcasts, to tell stories and broadcast their messages to wider audiences. The article highlights projects of San Francisco Bay Area organizations including KQED, Cal Academy of Sciences, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the San Francisco Bay Joint Venture. Bay Nature Magazine: Wrote a quarterly column called Ear to the Ground, featuring news from the conservation community and the natural world; published a feature article on the natural history of the native oyster of San Francisco Bay (October 2004); and wrote book reviews for the October 2003 issue. Terrain Magazine (fall 2001): For this environmental quarterly, performed extensive research and wrote an investigative report that addressed occupational, health and safety issues and the hazards of refineries. in Yosemite National Park. GOALS for Women newsletter. Two articles: "About Cultural Competence
National Park Service: Designed and wrote the first phase of a wildlife guide for the National Park Service, Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The main audience for this guide and other National Park Lab guides is high school students in Northern California. CHALK - Taught a six week web design course to underserved San Francisco high school students through a youth organization called CHALK (Communities in Harmony Advocating for Learning and Kids). For the class, designed the class curriculum and created a Web site for the students to access lessons and assignments. Afghan Coalition Youth Media Arts program: Designed and secured funds for an Afghan youth enrichment program. Under this new project, in the summer and fall of 2004, Afghan middle and high school students in southern Alameda County, filmed and produced a documentary on Afghan culture and history called "Who is an Afghan?" With workshops and the assistance of a filmmaker experienced in working with diverse groups, the Afghan Coalition's youth program created a groundbreaking film that dispels myths and misunderstandings about Afghan culture. The Argus and San Jose Mercury News wrote feature articles on the project and film debut on March 5, 2005. Manage Web site content for the Afghan Coalition, a community building and social service agency for Afghan Americans living in Southern Alameda County. Develop Web site strategies and manage content for GOALS for Women, based in Oakland, California. For Susana Quezada, a whole foods personal chef in Marin County, wrote content for her Web site and brochure based on interviews and market research.
Both domestically and internationally, work was directed toward writing/editing of public outreach materials, oil spill prevention through regulatory inspections, business environmental performance improvements, litigation research, environmental health, general environmental audits, and Website development. Clients included the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Alameda County Waste Management Authority and Recycling Board, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Selected projects include: Oil Spill Prevention Outreach: Project manager and editor for a national outreach project for the US EPA. Directed and wrote outreach materials for the regulated community including specialized guides for electrical utilities, mines and quarries, and oil production fields, among others. Business-Environmental Performance Outreach: Under the StopWa$te Partnership, acted as project manager for several organizations and businesses in Alameda County including: Peet's Coffee & Tea, Peerless Coffee Company, Oakland Zoo, Oakland-Alameda Coliseum and Arena, Compaq Computers, and the University of California at Berkeley. Provided technical assistance; promoted sustainable, environmentally responsible business practices; and recommended cost-saving alternatives to operational practices. The StopWa$te Partnership (www.stopwaste.org) is a program of the Alameda County Waste Management Authority and Recycling Board. Border XXI Outreach Support, U.S EPA: Supported the US EPA in a binational effort to establish a program for the sustainable development along the border between the United States and Mexico. Assisted in the preparation of a planning document that described the programs environmental health objectives, cultural considerations, and mechanisms for project implementation. San Diego-Tijuana Border Waste Wi$e Program: Supported this binational border assistance project funded by the U.S. EPA. This project involved evaluating recycling markets in the Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California regions and performing waste reduction assessments, training, and implementation at maquiladora plants in Tijuana Mexico and Otay Mesa, California. Palos Verdes Community Outreach: Surveyed several community organizations in the area of Palos Verdes, California to discuss the critical offshore contamination issues and encourage their involvement in the public process. The purpose of the surveys was to solicit comments and promote awareness of the various removal action alternatives identified by the US EPA for the offshore dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination. |
